Blog Ideas: If you don’t know what to blog about, these are the top five most popular things to blog.
Learn the difference first
First of all, before going into the setup process of starting a blog, I wanted to tell you that this will be your blog, only owned by you, not from the third-party blogging websites like Wix, Tumblr, Squarespace or Weebly. Though these are good websites for blogging but they don’t give us a freedom to create more advanced stuff, I would say they are very limited.
There are a few blogging platforms which are really good to work with and for one of them you probably heard of before. This is by far the most used and the most famous one and it’s called WordPress.
WordPress is open source software you can use to create a beautiful blog or website. It’s used by 33% of all the web from hobby blogs to the biggest news sites.
Also, there is a difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org.
For better understanding I’m going to compare WordPress.com with Blogger.com, both are a blogging websites/platforms, and all your posts, pages etc., are hosted on servers owned by these two companies. While with the WordPress.org you can host all your stuff with your own hosting and be the owner of your blog.
– Now, when we learned a difference between self-hosted blogs and blogs owned by third-party websites here’s a step by step tutorial on how to start a blog.
How to start a blog
The first thing we are going to do is click here to go to SiteGround website.
Step 1. Choose a domain name for your blog
If you already own a domain, check the ‘I already have a Domain’, enter your domain in the field below and go to Step 2.
How to choose a good domain name?
Choosing the right domain name is important for your blog.
I’m assuming that, somewhere in the future you want to create yourself a brand or simply you want to be recognized on the internet.
Let’s say you are starting a fashion blog, and you already know a name for it, that’s great. Now, you only need to find an available domain which has a name of your blog in it.
For you, who don’t know how to come up with a name for your blog, here’s a few tips:
For example, don’t use too many hyphens like www.my-blog-about-fashion.com, instead use something like this:
emilysblog.com, you get the idea.
Good domain name is:
- short – maximum of two or three words if possible
- easy to remember
Therefore, it’s important to come up with something unique. Take your time and write down everything that comes to your mind. The name you choose will represent you and your blog on the internet – be creative!
Take a look on our Infographic about domain names here: Infographic – What is a Domain Name?
Make sure your domain name is available to proceed to the next step.
Step 2. Choose a hosting plan
For everyone who is starting their blog for the first time, I recommend going with the StartUp plan. Of course, you can go with GrowBig or GoGeek if you plan on hosting multiple blogs or websites, our discount covers all of them and whatever plan and period you choose you will get a discounted price!
Step 3. Enter your information
Keep in mind that this will be your important information for your hosting account. After you successfully complete a registration, SiteGround will send you an email with all necessary information about your account.
Step 4. Additional services
Add extra services if you want, I personally recommend domain privacy because it’s very useful if you don’t want your personal information to be publicly available.
Your purchase was successful. A confirmation will be sent to your e-mail.
We have successfully completed a first part of how to start a blog – hosting part.
Step 5. WordPress installation
If you have completed the above steps, that means you are ready to install WordPress on your blog. Don’t worry, because SiteGround will do this for you, you just need to follow the steps in the video below:
